Patros universitetas (UPATRAS)

University of Patras is one of the leading higher education institutions and the third largest in Greece. UPATRAS is ranked well inside the world’s 601-650 Top Universities, it has the 259th position worldwide regarding citations per faculty according to the QS World Ranking system, and the 570th in general and 558th for excellence, according to Webometrics. The University’s Special Account for Research Grants has received an accreditation for Managerial Competence since 2009, issued by the Ministry of Education, certifying the administrative efficiency and capacity for the implementation of co-funded projects and programmes. Moreover, the University’s Special Account for Research Grants has a quality management system certified according to the EN ISO 9001:2015.

UPATRAS staff includes experienced and qualified project managers, researchers, professors and trainers as well as technicians and developers who have already participated in plenty Erasmus+ projects. There is a specific unit for the administration and financial management of national and European projects. Furthermore, UPATRAS operates a Lifelong Learning centre providing VET trainings covering various disciplines (and a Career Center supporting students for their professional and personal development).

The faculty of the Department of Management Science and Technology that represents UPATRAS in the GenAISA project has participated in many Erasmus+ and other R&D projects at the area of school education, adult education, VET and HE. The UPATRAS team in GenAISA has successfully coordinated the SEnDIng Erasmus+ Sector Skills Alliance project consisting of 12 partners, while currently it coordinates the SMACITE Erasmus+ Innovation Alliances project consisting of 12 partners. Moreover, the UPATRAS team has a comprehensive set of skills and competences, at the domains of project management, quality assurance, risk management, as well as digital skills development, competences frameworks, curriculum design, eLearning and learning resources developments. The expertise of the team spans diverse technologies such as AI, machine learning, deep learning, big data ana data analysis.

Maria Rigou

Project Manager for GenAISA

Maria Rigou is an Assistant Professor at the University of Patras, specializing in Management Science and Technology. With over 17 years of experience in managing and developing IT projects, she has played a pivotal role in more than 25 national and international research initiatives. Her expertise spans web mining, user modeling, HCI, and the design of educational games, with notable contributions to the development of learning platforms like Moodle and Open edX. As the Project Manager for GenAISA, Maria brings her extensive knowledge of technology-enhanced learning to drive the project’s success.

Vasileios Gkamas

Vasileios Gkamas

Technical Manager for GenAISA and Senior Researcher

Dr. Vasileios Gkamas is a Senior Researcher and Technical Manager at the University of Patras, with a strong background in computer science and educational technologies. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and an MSc in Integrated Hardware and Software Systems from the University of Patras, along with a Diploma in Information and Communication Systems Engineering from the University of the Aegean. With over 15 years of experience, he has contributed to numerous national and European projects focused on high-speed networks, e-infrastructures, and digital skills development. As the Technical Manager for GenAISA, Dr. Gkamas leverages his expertise in curriculum design, eLearning technologies, and large-scale educational projects to ensure the project’s technological excellence.

Sotiris Kotsiantis

Senior Expert and Researcher

Sotiris Kotsiantis is an Associate Professor specializing in Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Mathematics, University of Patras. With a Ph.D. in Machine Learning, his academic journey and expertise encompass data science, computational intelligence, and neural networks. Dr. Kotsiantis is a globally recognized researcher, consistently listed among the top 2% of the World’s Top Scientists (2020–2023) and cited over 23,000 times in scientific literature. His contributions to AI include pioneering research on ensemble learning, semi-supervised algorithms, and their applications, alongside active participation in leading projects like ESSA and GoodDEEDS. As a Senior Expert for GenAISA, Dr. Kotsiantis leverages his vast experience to shape innovative solutions in AI education and research.

Isidoros Perikos

Senior Researcher

Dr. Isidoros Perikos is a distinguished researcher specializing in Artificial Intelligence, with expertise in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and affective computing. He holds a Diploma in Computer Engineering, an MSc in Computer Science and Technology, and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, all from the University of Patras. With over 100 published papers in renowned international journals, conferences, and workshops, Dr. Perikos is an active member of IEEE, ACM, and the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society. His extensive experience includes contributions to numerous National and European projects, showcasing his commitment to advancing AI research and its practical applications.

Konstantinos Kovas

Senior Researcher

Konstantinos Kovas is a PhD candidate at the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department of the University of Patras, where he also earned his MSc in 2011. With over a decade of research experience, his expertise includes Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems, and Virtual World Training, with a strong focus on reasoning under uncertainty. Konstantinos has been a member of the Laboratory of Graphics, Multimedia & GIS since 2009 and has contributed to numerous national and European research projects. His extensive academic portfolio includes over 30 publications in international conferences, journals, and workshops, as well as teaching experience in vocational education and training (VET).
