Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland, is the second biggest university of applied sciences in Finland with 11,000 students and 730 employees. HHUAS has a long experience and proven track record especially in practical development of higher education, vocational teacher education, education export and labor market training. HHUAS has extensive experience in conducting successful RDI projects at national and international level. HHUAS coordinates the AI Innovation Hub of Ulysseus European University, where AI-based research and teaching practices are developed. HHUAS also coordinates a Joint Master Program in AI at Ulysseus European University. In addition, HHUAS is a member of the Finnish AI Region (EDIH) – we help businesses to prosper in AI transformation, and we renew our educational offerings in topics such as digital business, AI, information systems, human-AI interaction and technology adoption in organizations.

HHUAS has several ICT-related education programs (e.g. Degree Programme in Business Information Technology, Degree Programme in Digital Business Innovations, Master’s Degree Programme in Business Technologies) and several AI-related courses (e.g. Basics of Artificial Intelligence, Applied Artificial Intelligence, Python Programming, Data Analytics with Python, Cloud Architectures – AWS, Robotic Automation, Artificial Intelligence in Modern Business). HHUAS has also several past or going on AI-related projects (AI Forum, Big Data Big Business, AI-TIE, AI Driver, AI Health, FAIR) that this project will further develop or utilize. The project benefits the expertise of 3AMK AI-team that is an AI experts’ team of three applied universities in Helsinki. The focus of 3AMK AI-team is practical development and implementation of AI-solutions to education. HHUAS has a network of over 100 company partners and it is a member of several regional or national ICT networks.

The expertise of HHUAS in the field of AI research and development covers different topics: digital and twin transformation, new technology adoption, generative AI, ethics of AI, trustworthy AI, explainable AI, machine learning and natural language processing, advanced knowledge management, user interfaces, human-AI interaction, educational technology and learning analytics. In teaching advanced technologies, HHUAS mix AItechnologies and pedagogical expertise to add value to its students as we have both AI studies and the School of Vocational Teacher Education. Our teachers and experts develop new AI concepts and solutions with students, act as advisors to companies and perform applied research activities in the field of digitalization, data, and AI – all this together with our national and international partners.

Dr. Ari Alamäki of Haaga-Helia, an expert in this project, was a member of European Commission’s AI Expert Group in Education that co-created “Ethical guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence and data in teaching and learning for educators” in 2021-2022. This project can further develop and utilize the work of this EC’s AI Expert group and combine its recommendations and results to the activities of this project.

Ari Alamäki

Senior Expert

Dr. Ari Alamäki is a Principal Lecturer at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Turku. With over 20 years of experience in research and leadership, his work focuses on AI adoption, ethics, and digital transformation. He has been involved in key European AI initiatives, including coordinating the AI Innovation Hub of the Ulysseus European University Alliance. As a senior expert for GenAISA, he contributes his deep expertise in AI and education to advance the project’s mission.

Senior Expert

Ville Pennanen, MBA in Business Informatics, is a Teacher at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. Ville has over 20 years of experience in management accounting, IT solutions and developing businesses with data driven solutions in different kinds of business environments. Currently his teaching focuses on AI, Project Management and Business Analytics. In his career Ville has been working with data driven initiatives like CRM, ERP and AI implementations and is able to provide his knowledge of practical approach with data driven solutions.

Juhani Heikkinen

Senior Expert

Juhani Heikkinen, MSc in Applied Mathematics, is a Senior Lecturer at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences with over 30 years of experience in IT across industry and the public sector. His teaching focuses on AI, generative AI, ICT, and business processes, complemented by his role in supervising AI-related theses. With a strong background in IT project management and participation in national and EU-funded initiatives, Juhani contributes practical expertise to the GenAISA project.
